Blog #5
My experience with blogging has been good so far. I can basically state all of my opinions as long as I follow the prompt. At the same time, though, I also don’t really like that it is available for everyone to see. I like to keep my opinions anonymous, and having them out in the open like this makes me feel a tad uneasy. But I don’t mind that much. It’s still fun.
I believe using artificial intelligence in education is damaging to the students. Of course, there are times when it is useful, but it is still heavily abused by students. In the early days of AI, there were no AI detectors, so when children would be assigned essays to write, they would just let AI do it for them. I think this is horrendous. Doing this defeats the purpose of learning. School isn’t just about grades, even though many people think so; it’s about gaining knowledge of the world's basic information. Knowing how to write grammatically and efficiently is so important. If a student has an office job in the future, they will not be able to write a proposal. This will ultimately hinder them. If you mean using AI to make lesson plans, I believe that we shouldn’t do it. Having that human touch to teaching is what makes the small parts of learning fun for students. If it is just used for spell check and grammar, fine, but otherwise, I refuse to use it when I become a teacher.
When using Generative AI for the participation portfolio item, I believe that it was useful for getting a general idea of what is needed to teach for that day of the lesson plans. Even so, I think that it should only be an add-on and not a base for plans. A teacher's own ideas should be at the forefront of the lesson. I used to ask it to make me a worksheet for my lesson on solar systems. It did work and made a decent worksheet. The problem was that it wasn’t continuous with its ideas. I will not use it next time unless assigned to do so. If I do, I will not change my method.
I will not use Generative AI in my teaching practice. If I do, it will be used to help spot the grammatical errors I missed in a student's work. To address ethical concerns on this, I will tell the parents that any use of AI will be monitored. I will state my policy on it and strictly prevent it from being abused in my classroom.
